Northwestern Illinois Center for Independent Living (NICIL) was one of the original five (5) Center’s for Independent Living (CIL’s) in Illinois. We began in 1985 and haven’t stopped yet! Today there are 22 CIL’s in Illinois we are part of the Illinois Network of Center’s for Independent Living (INCIL). Together CIL’s are charged with supporting people with disabilities live their lives as they choose with supports from the community and others. We believe it is an honor and privilege to serve our consumers.
Often we are asked about our work and we love to tell the story of NICIL and the amazing consumers and volunteers we have. But we recognize people first not disabilities and that is what it is about. We support people just like us. 51% or more of our team members, management, volunteers, and Board of Directors are all people with disabilities.
NICIL service five (5) counties in Northwestern Illinois: Carroll, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside Counties. Our main office can be found at 412 Locust Street, in Sterling, Illinois and our branch location is at the Rock River Center in Oregon. Don’t be surprised if you see us working in your community as we are frequently out in our NICIL territory working.
